Making Sense of Virginia’s Gerrymandering Debacle

Did the Virginia Supreme Court steal the votes of Virginia Voters?

Sound bites from Politicians would have you believe that was the case.

United States Senator Mark Warner of VIRGINIA – “More than three million Virginians cast their ballots on the amendment – and they deserved to have their voices heard.”

United States Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York – “Virginia was an election of three million Americans. [The Virginia Supreme Court] did not overturn a map, it turned over an election. It’s one thing for a court to check a legislature or an executive but the end-all and be-all of power in America should be the people.”

United States Congressman James P. McGovern of Massachusetts – “The Virginia Supreme Court’s ruling is an insult to the majority of citizens who voted to fight back against Trump’s attempt to steal the midterm elections.
The entire GOP strategy is voter suppression.”

The reality - Virginia Supreme Court's decision prevented 1.3 Million early voters in the 2025 General Election from being disenfranchised. The advocates of the gerrymandering were attempting to disinfranchise voters in two ways - 1st by disregarding the Virginia Constitutional Process for amendments to the Constitution which would have disinfranchised 1.3 Million early voters, and 2nd by creating a map designed to remove the voice of almost 1/2 of Virginia voters with its politically drawn voting districts--something Virginians overwhelmingly rejected by approving a nonpolitical method for drawing those districts.

Is "two wrongs make a right" what we want our Virginia Congressmen teaching our children? Their argument-- the Republicans have taken away the voice of voters in other states, so lets take away the voice of nearly half of Virginia's citizens with a "temporary " gerrymandering scheme that will disenfranchise nearly 1/2 of Virginia's voters! Wake up and do better! ["Amend]...to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections..." If you think that citizens in another state have been violated and disenfranchised from voting, a scheme to harm Virginia's citizens is not the way --- and to do it in a way that violated the procedural requirements of the Virginia Constitution is not the answer! We need better leadership in Virginia--We expect more!
